“ELECTION COMMISION OF INDIA” is an independent body of India and is a part of its constitution. ECI helps in conducting free and fair election in nation of India. In the year 1950, January 25 was the day when election commission of India was coined into existence. It was formed under the constitution of Article “324.”
Structure of the Election Commission of India
The president of India appoints Chief election commissioner and two Election commissioners. Presently these three members are essential elements of ECI.
There was only one Chief Commissioner of election until the year 1989. After 1989, two election commissioners were appointed to assist Chief Commissioner of election. A law was passed in the parliament of India, which made this compulsory to appoint two election commissioners along with Chief election commissioner of election commission of India. Presently, “Mr. Shahabuddin Yaqoob Quraishi” is serving as Chief Election Commissioner of India.
Chief election commissioner and election commissioner can be removed from office when two third majority of Lok and Rajya Sabha members. They can also be removed on grounds of misconduct and inability to perform their duties. A president can use their power in selection of Chief election commissioner or election commissioner. Time tenure of these important people in ECI is fixed by the president of India. An election commissioner can be terminated by the president of India, form their duties if chief election commissioner lodges a complaint against them. Remuneration for chief election commissioner is same as Chief justice of India. A right of taking decisions is bestowed with all the three crucial members of election commission of India. Period of service for election commissioner is six years or until they attain the age of sixty-five. Until date, election commission of India has successfully conducted more than three hundred elections.
The Election Commission has authority for directing, routing and manage all elections of parliament and state government and of all elections to workplace of Vice-President and President of India.
